ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the implementation of the helping process, it must be borne in mind that many of the skills mentioned may also be used in other phases of the work. Many responses to clients by social workers fall into the category of minimal intervention, but there is always the risk that a major need will be missed. Part of the sodal work role involves mediation or advocacy on behalf of clients, for example, in some instances where there is conflict or misunderstanding between a client and an organisation. The task of facilitating learning and growth for clients means that social workers often have to draw on a range of theories of development and approaches to child and adult learning. The professional worker with the best knowledge of the client is normally the best person to complete the first report or record.
