ABSTRACT
Anyone applying to visit a prison will be automatically vetted by the Home Office using existing records. This is not as intrusive as it may sound at first. Credit companies and many prospective employers may do exactly the same. Once cleared for admittance, everything depends on the goodwill of the prison officers. All uniformed services are hierarchyic and have their own terms of address. Women may feel very uncomfortable at the prospect of going into a male prison but there is really no need to worry. It might be the case that there will be ‘risque’ heckling from individuals but it could just as easily be aimed at the men in one's group. Remand prisoners constitute a transient prison population and this often leads to less provision for outside stimuli. Several performers were involved in a mixture of music, poetry and improvisation and this was backed up with an exhibition of artwork produced mainly by the full-time art group.
