ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how an integration of modern attachment theory with narrative theory and an understanding of relational trauma can inform, orient and direct a systemic supervision process. The therapeutic alliance and the supervision alliance can be said to share many similarities. The practice of psychotherapy and supervision is emotionally demanding. Both roles can bring lifelong satisfactions with an intense commitment to learning and development, for example intellectual stimulation, the evolution of relational ethics and values, emotional growth and enhanced personal meanings. Supervision is a crucial aspect of both therapist and supervisor self-care in our opinion, and one responsibility of the supervisor is to always enquire about our well-being as supervisees.
