ABSTRACT

Blame, guilt, responsibility and forgiveness are arguably some of the most important issues in family life. Seeking and offering explanations for our actions is essential for all human interaction. Many family therapists have argued instead that the fundamental unit of analysis of families should be seen to be triadic – typically, but not invariably, the parents and the child. Byng-Hall developed the concepts of corrective and replicative scripts, which adds a fundamentally important aspect to attachment theory and is central to ANT. The second usage of scripts from Byng-Hall is as conscious intentional processes. Scripts can be seen to lie at an important crossroads between unconscious actions and conscious intentional choice.
