ABSTRACT

This chapter sets the scene by presenting the book’s background and a broad overview of its conceptual framework, scope and structure. In so doing, it offers brief introductions to three general approaches/principles of marine fisheries management, their rationale and application in achieving sustainable management of marine fisheries. Furthermore, the chapter demonstrates how sustainability in the marine fisheries sector is linked with the broader sustainable development goals devised by the United Nations. The chapter also introduces Bangladesh’s political, legal and institutional landscapes in which the marine fisheries sector operates. Finally, the chapter briefly touches upon the need for strong regional cooperation for managing transboundary fish stocks.
