ABSTRACT

This chapter first underscores the rationale for a robust institutional framework in achieving sustainable management of marine fisheries. The chapter then outlines the existing institutional structure for marine fisheries management in Bangladesh and presents an assessment of the institutions involved in regulating marine fisheries. The chapter reveals that the shortcomings in national legislation are not the only key problem to undermine the effective management of Bangladeshi fisheries, and the current institutions are wholly inadequate to implement these provisions effectively. The chapter recommends that the institutional framework for marine fisheries regulation be reorganised logically by giving adequate importance to the lowest tier of management as the same is directly involved in the management process. The chapter also calls for instilling good governance in the institutional framework; otherwise, the general population will not receive the benefits of the marine fisheries sector.
