ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises the discussion on Bangladesh’s legislative, policy and institutional frameworks for marine fisheries management and presents a set of recommendations to bolster those frameworks. These recommendations draw on the lessons learnt from Bangladesh’s experience of managing its marine fisheries, which can offer significant insights for countries with similar realities, especially Bangladesh’s closest maritime neighbours in the Bay of Bengal. The recommendations include reforming the marine fisheries regime to incorporate the basic components of ecosystem-based fisheries management, upgrading the institutional arrangement involved in marine fisheries regulation to implement an EBFM model, and forming strong regional cooperation to manage transboundary fish stocks.
