ABSTRACT

This chapter is an introduction to research in technical communication. It describes research as the systematic collection and analysis of observations for the purpose of creating new knowledge that can inform action. Research in technical communication informs practical decisions that technical communicators make. Its value is that it shapes the best practices of the field. The chapter categorizes and describes research by its goals: theoretical, empirical, interpretivist, postmodern, developmental, and evaluative. It also categorizes and describes research by its methods: quantitative, qualitative, critical theory, literature review, and mixed methods. Finally, the chapter describes how research can be disseminated in open publications, editor-regulated publications, and refereed journals.
