ABSTRACT

When a person suffering from psychological or medical problems seeks help, an attachment behaviour described as care-seeking is often activated (sometimes described in terms of regression) and is normally met with care-giving behaviours by the helper. The group members need to develop a sense of belonging to the group, a wish to be part of it and a feeling of being accepted and supported by the other members, i.e. group cohesion. Problematic behaviours including care-seeking and regression will certainly appear in the therapy, but preferably later, when the climate is safe enough to allow vulnerability and neediness to be expressed. In time-limited group therapy in general it is common that the individual foci will be presented to the group during the first session as part of the introduction. People who want to be group leaders would do well to begin their journey as a member of a therapy group.
