ABSTRACT

Many citizens and professionals will admit that our so-called social fabric has seemed to deteriorate and there is a lack of civility and social responsibility in society. The model for teaching personal and social responsibility has evolved since the publication of Beyond Balls and Bats: Alienated (and Other) Youth in the Gym by Don Hellison in 1978. Dr. Hellison first developed the model as a way to teach physical education to inner-city youth who were known to be at risk in several places: in school, at home, in society. The venue for his new vision would be physical education class; the medium would be the activity content taught in his physical education program. The approach would become the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) model. The main idea behind TPSR is that much of the content taught in physical education programs allows students opportunities to practice and learn how to take responsibility for themselves and others.
