ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the many things to consider in making good assessments in physical education within a model-based instructional approach. Assessment provides the crucial link between standards or other defined outcomes for a program and the program’s success. Norm-based assessments require the collection of a large number of scores on standardized tests, such as fitness tests or skills tests. Scores are then compiled into subgroups according to some common factors of test takers, usually age and gender. Criterion-based assessments compare a student’s performance to standards (criteria) deemed appropriate for mastery in a particular area. Scores from these assessments usually offer a number, or percentage, for the amount of material each student has mastered. The performance standards are determined by the person who uses the assessment technique and reflect one’s professional judgment about the quality of each score.
