ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the necessary evidence to demystify the notion that spirituality does not belong in education nor is it the responsibility of the early childhood educator. The author unpacks our understanding of our Constitutional constraints, given the existence of the separation of church and state in the U.S. Then the role of the teacher is explored, and a case is made for spirituality to be nurtured in the classroom. Finally, research studies looking specifically into the early childhood classroom are presented, highlighting what has been and is being done by teachers in secular educational settings to support and nurture children spiritually.
