ABSTRACT

This chapter shares vignettes that expand on the practices Ms. Escarfuller uses to nurture children’s spirituality in the secular classroom. Using her spiritual beliefs as a scaffolding, she shares classroom experiences that aim to nurture the individual child to be their Highest Self. She shares classroom scenarios with children ages three to 10 that nourish the children’s sense of connection to each other and to their natural environment. She expands on the importance of language and treating the child as a full human being, worthy of his needs, thoughts, and feelings being valued equally as those of an adult. She shows how through vivid storytelling, intentionally designed materials, and schoolwide projects children build their sense of mattering and belonging. Within these experiences, she demonstrates how the children may find their purpose and work with high expectations for themselves.
