ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the steps that best prepare candidates for the interview process to help aspiring candidates explore the integral aspects of these activities. The president’s job description is significantly influenced by ongoing research on the qualifications and skills needed to perform the job. Aspirants should carefully study the job announcement because it is a resource for understanding what is expected. It defines the preparation needed to do the job. The creation of the job announcement begins with the Board of Trustees declaring a vacancy. It is an official interest to hire a new president. There are noted challenges in the Board’s involvement in the creation of the job announcement. Often, members lack an understanding of the marketplace for a president. After the job announcement is publicized, candidates are screened by the committee. They then are recommended to compete in what is typically called the “second round.”.
