ABSTRACT

No presidency is attainable without the required experience, which accumulates challenging work and, yes, some luck. Nevertheless, many other contexts exist that help defines who they are as a leader and what steps are needed to be ready for the presidency, especially the first position. This chapter focuses on the story of Clementine. Clementine began her career as a store clerk, where she first developed the knack for meeting people, communicating well, and being friendly and helpful. During her tenure and new-found growth and practical understanding, she experienced new leadership that was more informed, global, and less parochial in thought and behavior. By focusing on this story people can observe how some American Association of Community Colleges competencies are integrated into Clementine’s journey. Clementine mirrors the value of gaining “Depth and Breadth” of Experiences, albeit she was not always sure of the roles and, in some cases, the expectations of each new assignment.
