ABSTRACT

Aspiring leaders would do well to understand that pursuing the presidency is an arduous and sometimes lonely journey, irrespective of who they are. In the COVID-19 world, new changes made to the institution and higher education, in general, will have long-term effects. The post-COVID world will likewise have new needs for inspired leadership. As gleaned from retired and practicing leaders, there is more to the position than persistence, focus, patience, creativity, dedication, stamina, right thinking, and motivation. Instead, it is a new reenvisioning of these competencies that will move leadership into the future. The right motivation includes passion and commitment to serving students and the community, not building power and status. The community college presidency is a noble profession and is quite rewarding for those who choose to serve. Expectedly, the challenges are many, especially as the sociocultural, political, and economic climates become more intense and tumultuous.
