ABSTRACT

This chapter details five popular and tried ways in which aspirants engage to get to the presidency position. Traditional academic doctoral degrees serve as filters in alerting hiring consultants, boards of trustees, and human resources departments of potential leaders. Earning a doctoral degree is personally, academically, and mentally a formidable challenge and will significantly impact one’s family, career, and personal life. Early researchers documented that human capital investment, including participating in professional development, heavily and positively influence career advancement. The chapter discusses several options for professional development. Grow Your Own Programs are generally established by the president and offered to interested or promising prospects on a volunteer or assigned basis. Aspen Institute College Excellence Program is a nonprofit educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. It fosters leadership training based on enduring values and provides a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. Mentoring occurs on two levels – Unplanned or Formal.
