ABSTRACT

New parents need to work out a new relationship with their own parents. The real test of being adult is if the people can be separate and free-thinking when they are actually in the company of their parents. The people are likely to have different ideas about parenting because styles change. Sometimes parents have actually changed since their days of rearing babies and small children. For most, the love felt for a grandchild is almost tribal, because of the feeling that the grandchild is one of the family. Feeding a new baby may provoke jealousy or worry in older children, who often show signs of wanting to be babies themselves, keen to breastfeed or suck on a bottle. New parents do need concern from someone outside and validation as to whether they are doing a good job as parents.
