ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the substantial contribution of the private sector to the policing of economic crime. It starts by distinguishing a continuum of degrees of publicness and privateness. The chapter then moves on to examine the in-house capacity of organisations dedicated towards combatting economic crime, from security managers, compliance staff to fraud investigators. The substantial commercial sector offering services for fees to organisations and individuals to address economic crime are assessed, ranging from private investigation firms to data analytics companies. The important role of non-governmental organisations is explored and then the substantial voluntary capacity is directed at economic crimes. The chapter ends with a critical evaluation of the private contribution.
