ABSTRACT

A. C. Littleton professional career in accountancy began in 1912, when he was employed as a public accountant in the firm of Deloitte, Plender, Griffiths & Co. of Chicago. In 1915 he joined the faculty of the College of Commerce of-the University of Illinois, where he held the rank of professor of accountancy; he also served as Assistant Dean of the College of Commerce and, for twenty-one years, as Assistant Director of the Bureau of Economic and Business Research. Knowledge on the part of the accountant of business cycles and their effects upon business will strengthen his position as an adviser to the businessman. “Slowly he is gaining the reputation of being a man who is capable of looking at affairs broadly and with a degree of detachment few others in business possess.” Experience gained in the second project shows that one of the greatest difficulties faced is that of securing homogeneous data.
