ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 is focused on laterality in neurological disorders. After a short introduction to neurological disorders, we highlight laterality research in Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. For each disorder, we give a short definition and an overview of research on handedness and functional hemispheric asymmetries assessed with psychophysiological paradigms, such as the dichotic listening task or the visual half-field technique. We then discuss functional hemispheric asymmetries assessed with EEG and fMRI as well as structural hemispheric asymmetries assessed with MRI, DTI, and other neuroimaging techniques. We also highlight findings on laterality of lesion onset side.
