ABSTRACT

In the preceding chapters, we gave an overview of research on hemispheric asymmetries in neurodevelopmental, psychiatric, and neurological disorders. Chapter 5 is focused on integrating these findings. In this chapter, we evaluate the extent to which clinical laterality research can aid diagnostics or therapeutic interventions and how hemispheric asymmetries and psychopathology are related on a more general level. We argue that both genetic and non-genetic influence factors link hemispheric asymmetries and neurodevelopmental, psychiatric, and neurological disorders. Since these factors are largely diagnostically unspecific, taking a transdiagnostic and symptom-based approach may be advantageous for future research projects in clinical laterality research. The chapter concludes with a section on the importance of open science in clinical laterality research and on how to improve research practices in this existing field in the wake of the replication crisis in psychology and neuroscience.
