ABSTRACT

In the SAFE approach, our focus is primarily on risk and problematic behaviour reduction which we propose is a significant barrier to recovery. Understanding the factors driving such behaviours is vital in tailoring risk assessment and formulation to refocus care efforts. Our refined cognitive model underpins a shared process utilising the full resources of the team.

Reviewing the research and clinical practice literature in the context of our unique shared formulation templates it is readily apparent that appraisals of psychotic symptoms themselves are only part of the clinical picture. We highlight the role played by personality, substance use and personal history in developing a shared understanding of individual risk. This enables us to more accurately target the team’s efforts to key barriers to recovery.
