ABSTRACT

Formulation is the cornerstone of the SAFE approach. Our unique multi-type and multilevel approach enables teams to develop an understanding of the service users’ needs and difficulties in the context of complex and enduring psychosis to support them in recovering a life that they find meaningful and satisfying.

We review the current literature and outline our approach to formulation. Formulations are not an end in themselves and may best be regarded as living documents. They are of the most value when used to inform care planning and designed in line with need-adapted treatment principles.

Formulations should be regarded as a set of working hypotheses and open to revision in the face of ongoing assessment and updated information. They provide a good enough map to navigating the challenges and difficulties faced by our service users at a given time.
