ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 explores the lifelong learning processes that can occur during musicking at festivals, summer schools, and other live music events. It provides ethnographic descriptions of festivals such as, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, where musicians can experience the whole gamut of informal, non-formal, and formal learning moments. The chapter also discusses the cultural and educational impact of summer schools, like CCÉ’s Scoil Éigse and Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy. Many of the events featured herein are highlights on the community’s calendar and provide exciting, albeit short-lived, opportunities to immerse oneself in Irish traditional music.
