ABSTRACT

The lifelong process of becoming an Irish traditional musician

While each chapter of this book has zoomed in on each learning scenario, the conclusion broadens out the discussion to explore overarching patterns of musical enculturation within Irish traditional music. There are four experiences indicative and reflective of the musical culture. Every traditional musician learns by listening, socializing, playing, and doing so over a long period of time. Rather than vague, these four constructs are flexible enough to apply to learners born in any generation or location. Exploring issues of authenticity, change and stability, lifelong learning, and identity formation, the final chapter highlights numerous implications for learners, teachers, policymakers, and community organizers involved in promoting Irish traditional music. The book’s conclusions underscore how important it is to provide learners with multiple, diverse ways to play, practice, and celebrate Irish traditional music.
