ABSTRACT

Human beings have a fundamental need for connection (i.e., relationship, closeness, belonging). This chapter begins with a discussion of experiences of ultimate conversational connection, “transcendent interactions,” characterized by absorption, understanding, mutuality, and discovery. The basic premise is that communication skills smooth the way toward human connection. With that foundation, subsequent sections focus on the skill-relevant implications of three large-scale 21st century trends: (a) evolving technologies, (b) aging and aging populations, and (c) cultural diversity and burgeoning intercultural contact. The chapter concludes with “a note of caution” and “a note of possibility.” On one hand there is an acknowledgement that communication skills can be used to manipulate and exploit others – all the while, appearing to be concerned with their best interests. By way of contrast, there exists the possibility of authentic dialogue – interactions free of self-interested manipulation and characterized by engagement, mutual acceptance, understanding, and insight.
