ABSTRACT

The shift from the pressure and momentum of staging one annual production meant more time to explore what the group understood by performance and by the function of the group. The learning disabled theatre of Different Light, due to the specific circumstances from which it has emerged, makes a contribution that emphasizes potential, the potential of learning disabled people as creators and performers, as theatre artists. Three Ecologies of Different Light opened with a version of a Maori pepeha, or formal greeting, in which each performer came on stage and spoke of their attachments to family or tribe, their river, and their mountain. The intention ofThe History of Different Light was for the performers to give their own histories of 15 years of working together. In rehearsal discussions and improvisations, it had become apparent that the actors had very different memories of the past productions.
