ABSTRACT

Singapore's higher education system is one of Asia's success stories. While it may have taken the United States and many European countries centuries to develop excellent universities, Singapore has been able to accelerate the development of its higher education system in a relatively short time. In line with recent changes in the economic and competitive landscape, and globalisation, the focus of education is now on developing skills and an entrepreneurial mindset for Singapore to thrive in a knowledge-intensive and innovation-led economy. The second critical need that education addresses is the aspiration of Singapore citizens for a better career and a better life. It intends to be inclusive, and it has started to incorporate non-academic entry requirements such as interviews for a place in the higher education system.
