ABSTRACT

Magical practice is essentially concerned with a sustained and regular interaction with otherworldly reality, and a magical training helps a magician construct an alternative framework for experiencing that reality. This chapter emphasizes on training as a high magician. It describes the process involved in becoming involved in a systematic magical training as an insider. The process is similar to more conventional fieldwork, which involves learning the ways and mores of a new culture, struggling with a new language, and starting to make sense of the complexities of everyday life. High magic techniques focus initially on training the mind of the magician, mainly through meditation on the Tree of Life glyph. The main aim of the magical work was the exploration of the self as 'divine spark' in the 're-union with godhead', a process that was viewed as a form of spiritual evolution—the self evolving spiritually through a succession of lifetimes.
