Jatinder Verma book
Jatinder Verma is a theater director and co-founder of theater company Tara Arts. Jatinder has a cosmopolitan sensibility and is also politicized and racialized by his migration from East Africa to Britain and the racism he experienced once there; he translates these into performative domains. Migration and racism are the defining elements of his innovative creativity, though his theatrical productions are about far more than this. With his mother and sisters, Jatinder left Nairobi aged fourteen in 1968 even as the Labour Government under Harold Wilson was drawing up an Act of Parliament to restrict the entry of Commonwealth British citizens into Britain. Many families left within a few days to get into Britain before the legislation came into effect. Jatinder said he carried a blanket onto the plane; otherwise they brought very few things. He has come to view it as a life-changing event of ultimate dissonance and disequilibrium.
