ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author looks at the developments that led to the construction of the community hall and at a number of other community developments, particularly the community cooperative. Carnan community hall was opened in 1983 and the scenes above briefly describe just some of the activities that the hall was venue to in its first two years. In addition there was the Burns supper, badminton, the youth club, a Highland dancing class, a whist drive, men's keep-fit, several sales-of-work, and the playgroup. Alongside, and partly inspired by the romantic conception of communities as part of a fast disappearing traditional way of life is a community development conception of communities as authentic 'grass-roots' social groupings.
