ABSTRACT

Daroga Mukhopadhyay describes a case for which he resentfully had had to cut short a much-needed holiday during Durga Puja. The case was a particularly baffling one and it had all begun with the horrific discovery of a woman’s dead body stuffed into a chest lying in a warehouse. The daroga’s first attempt to establish the identity of the victim ended in an embarrassing debacle. Subsequently, however, when he began pursuing a lead that took him to a distant hamlet outside Kolkata, he was able to make certain fortuitous discoveries and ingenious observations, based on which not only did he trace the identity of the brutalized woman was but also ran her killers to ground.
