ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the reader to the next level of nonlinear thinking, or advanced nonlinear thinking. These overlap with and go over and above what was described in the introductory text by the same author, Principles of Counseling and Psychotherapy. Additional nonlinear thinking elements are the ones used by master practitioners to help clients. These include deductive and inductive reasoning, understanding double-binds, using Socratic questioning, first- and second-order change, and the role of creativity and expertise. These sophisticated elements are important to understand as part of the work of master practitioners in order to move into the heart of the seventh domain, using paradoxical interventions and understanding the nonlinear thinking behind it.
