ABSTRACT

The construction of children's museums in China is still in its early stage, for which the major spaces are located in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. This chapter first reviews the development history and current status of children's museums in China, and then introduces four museums that can be classified as children's museums and are typical in China's efforts to build hands-on exploratory spaces for children: Shanghai Children's Museum (the earliest in China), the China National Children's Center (CNCC) Lao Niu Children's Discovery Museum, the Hohhot Lao Niu Children's Discovery Museum, and the Experience Center at the China Soong Ching Ling Science & Culture Center for Young People.
