ABSTRACT
John Locke’s social contract places authority for making laws in the people who elect their representatives to the legislative branch. Locke lays the foundation for the form of liberal democracy that is prevalent all over the world, including ideas like the separation of powers, individual rights, and religious toleration. This chapter outlines Locke’s political ideas and describes the essential role they play in the development of liberal civil society.
