ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses political theory related to the contemporary challenges posed to liberal civil society of multiculturalism, religion, and climate change. It is essential to be able to speak across different cultures in a civil society. Different ways of approaching this political problem include John Rawls’s political liberalism and Charles Taylor’s “politics of difference.” Specifically, the debate between individual rights and groups rights is highlighted in the chapter. The chapter also discusses the place of religion in contemporary civil society, particularly as it relates to the conflicts that happen there. Finally, the pressing problems of climate change, and the role that civil society plays, is discussed.
