ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines contributions of several Islamic thinkers to political theory, including Alfarabi, Averroes, and Avicenna. In particular, the chapter describes the influence Plato and Aristotle had on these philosophers and the ways in which they themselves influence future thinking about the rule of law, democracy, and civil society. The chapter then moves on to discuss the influential Jewish philosopher Maimonedes, including his view of human nature, the relationship between religion and law, and the significance of teachers (rabbis).
