ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the book with a summary of the treaty fight and subsequent rejection of the Treaty of Versailles by the United States Senate. It shows the divide between the Republican reservationists led by Henry Cabot Lodge, the irreconcilables led by William Borah, and Wilson’s Democratic Party supporters. It illustrates the debates culminating with Wilson’s western tour and subsequent stroke that left him bedridden. It concludes this portion by summarizing the final debates in the Senate and the rejection of the Treaty of Versailles. The book finishes with an overview of Wilson’s legacy while considering the overarching historiographical debates about Wilson and Wilsonianism, illustrating both praise and criticism of Wilson’s presidency.
