ABSTRACT

There are several aspects of the facilitation process that one needs to address when drawing the map. These are the six dimensions of facilitation: planning, meaning, confronting, feeling, structuring and valuing. The facilitator should consider all six dimensions when designing the facilitation process. The facilitator has to be flexible and creative, drawing out intuitively from experience to improvise and respond to the moment, introducing some quick changes at great speed and flexibility. The success of facilitation is largely dependent on the climate and environment. Facilitation begins the moment a group agrees to meet and have a discussion, whether it be a weekly meeting, a project team update or a report to the Board of Directors. The facilitator has to ensure that the silent minority – or the marginalised voices – are encouraged to participate. The “punch” formula is applicable to all presentations during the facilitation process and not just at the start of the session.
