ABSTRACT

In August 1887 when Lee was staying at the house of her new friend, Clementina Anstruther-Thomson (“Kit”) in Scotland, Robinson announced her engagement to James Darmesteter, a professor of Persian language and literature at the Collège de France. The Robinson family was opposed to the marriage and so was the Paget family. Lee suffered a minor nervous collapse and Anstruther-Thomson looked after her quite devotedly, which initiated the next important relationship in Lee’s life.
