ABSTRACT

The stories of former Bosnia peacekeepers and Afghanistan combat veterans form the basis for this book. This part introduction offers a short overview of the veterans’ missions, in advance of the detailed discussions that will follow. In sum, Bosnia soldiers were sent as peacekeepers to an area where there was actually little peace to keep, as the Srebrenica genocide tragically demonstrated, and Afghanistan soldiers were deployed with both permission to use force and political and public objections to fighting.
