ABSTRACT

The Tango is a sequence of structured interventions. In this chapter the more discreet, smaller micro-interventions are outlined that are continually used to address the client’s inner or interpersonal experience in a way that moves the session forward. These interventions, such as evocative questioning, come from traditional humanistic Rogerian therapy and from more relationally orientated models of family therapy that focus on repeating cycles of interaction with others that limit growth and adaptation. The focus is always on what is occurring in the present and on process variables, such as how emotional responses are constructed. The reader becomes familiar with these micro skills again through clinical examples and exercises.
