ABSTRACT

Attachment theory came into being at another point in history where the harmful consequences of loneliness and socioemotional deprivation were beginning to be understood. In the 1940s, researchers began exploring the reasons behind the negative effects of hospitalization on children. These researchers were among the few to challenge existing paradigms. They paved the way for the originator of attachment theory, John Bowlby. Thus, Bowlby recognized that unresolved conflicts from a parent's own childhood can influence his or her interactions with progeny. This supported his growing belief that maternal loss or separation in early life has devastating consequences. In 1952, Bowlby and Robertson paired up to make a seminal movie to address maternal separation, a movie that would have an enormous impact on hospital policies and the ideas of attachment theory.
