ABSTRACT

Chapter 10: The creative practitioner: planning for creative Physical Education

Teachers are paramount in creating and enabling creative teaching and learning opportunities. This can only happen if the creative practitioner or teacher has passion, commitment and engagement. A belief in the value of teaching Physical Education and creative learning and teaching will bring approaches to Physical Education that will build on learners’ existing knowledge, skills understandings and interests. In this chapter, we discuss planning for creative Physical Education that is underpinned by our understanding of learning theories, principles and values, beliefs, teaching styles and strategies. We also discuss the development of an inclusive, enabling environment, differentiation, safe practice, long, medium and short-term planning, aims, objectives/outcomes and assessment. In addition, we explore ways of using technology to enhance teaching Physical Education creatively. We argue that for teachers to maintain high-quality teaching and learning it is important to keep abreast of current thinking through reflection, evaluation and continuing professional development. Finally, we remind ourselves of the connection to the POWER principles and physical literacy as a holistic approach to Physical Education.
