ABSTRACT

Chapter 2: Physical competence, physical literacy and creatively

In this chapter, we consider children's physical and movement development in the context of becoming physically competent, through the laying down of firm foundations in the early years and building on and consolidating these throughout the primary school years. We go on to discuss the importance of play and a physically active lifestyle for the developing child, in facilitating the acquisition of a vast movement vocabulary, experience of creativity, language, cognitive and social development and contrast these with the developmental detriment of a sedentary lifestyle. We explore the concept of physical literacy, drawing on the definition, the three domains, being the affective, physical and cognitive, and the attributes relating to the domains. In the final section of the chapter, we explore relationships between creativity and physical literacy, both through ways in which creative activity can contribute to physical literacy and ways in which physical literacy can contribute to creativity.
