ABSTRACT

Chapter 6: Developing gymnastics

Drawing from and building upon the achievements promoted in the previous chapter, creative teaching and learning now progresses to a study of dimensions of gymnastics-related movement. These are designed to enable learners to extend their gymnastics vocabulary and apply this to the building of linked sequences of movement working on the floor, on mats and on the full range of apparatus. Suggestions are made for recording the planning and content of sequences. Roles of the teacher are discussed. The chapter concludes with introductions to the disciplines of acrobatic gymnastics in which learners work in pairs and groups and manipulative gymnastics incorporating such elements as a ball, ribbon, hoop and rope. These serve as preparations for progressing from primary into secondary education.
