ABSTRACT

Chapter 7: Introducing games

Based on the three themes of locomotion, stability and object control, much of this chapter focuses on the development of manipulative ability, through games-related activities, for young learners, in which teachers draw on children's pre-school years of unstructured, creative and physically active play. New learning is couched in enquiry-led, investigative, guided discovery and the promotion of physical literacy. Key aspects of the chapter include ways to facilitate the exploration and mastery of the wide range of games-related equipment to build an extensive movement vocabulary, increase movement memory and enhance movement quality. Devising cooperative and competitive games to increase experience and understanding of cooperation and competition and the concepts of winning, losing and fair play are explored.
