ABSTRACT

Chapter 8: Developing games

This chapter builds upon the skill development and games-playing achievements of young learners outlined in the previous chapter. A broad range of game-types is explored, including creative approaches to target games, net-wall, strike-field and invasion games. The focus is on the constituents of successful game play, including determining appropriate rules, tactics and strategies, rather than on the mastery of skill sets, prior to applying them in specific, named games. Learning to make creative use of the environment, the resources available and to take account of the individual needs of all participants is seen as paramount in game creation and successful participation. Successful outcomes include that learners progress from their primary school education as physically competent, confident, motivated and knowledgeable game players, game creators, team leaders and team members.
