ABSTRACT

The good habits created in the actors in one set of rehearsals will support the next set. The creative notes, based on the actions being pursued in the scene, deal with the nuances of the actors’ performances. The technical notes deal with the presentation of the scene. Adverbs such as quickly, slowly, quietly, loudly, etc. are clear, easy to process, and easy to execute. A simple physical adjustment is often all an actor needs to provide the necessary behavior or the illusion thereof. A change in a person’s physical dynamics is a product of an internal response to some form of stimulus, either external or internal. A comedic example of the effective use of the pause is Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm. The bit always ends with him deciding whether or not the other person is on the level; on occasion the test fails completely and he’s no more sure of the truth than when he began.
